Student Sues Facebook Over Privacy Violation

A law student has decided to sue Facebook over privacy rights and has invited its one billion users to join him.

Austrian Max Schrems was claiming 500 euro (£397) damages for everyone who signed up to his campaign through fbclaim.com.

The lawsuit could be the biggest ever taken in Europe depending on how many people register.

The 26-year-old was unhappy the internet giant allegedly violated data protection by tracking internet use on external sites, including the use of ‘like’ buttons.

Mr Schrems also claimed Facebook supported the US Prism surveillance programme, which was exposed by whistleblower Edward Snowden.

‘We are only claiming a small amount, as our primary objective is to ensure correct data protection,’ he said.

‘However, if many thousands of people participate we would reach an amount that will have a serious impact on Facebook.’

The lawsuit was being taken in the Commercial Court in Vienna against the Irish subsidiary of the New York-listed web giant.

Facebook has so far declined to comment.
