Authorities
found the body of a 6-year-old boy in the frigid waters of Oregon's Yaquina Bay
after a woman told police she tossed her son over a bridge, CNN reports.
Two boats
and a helicopter searched the area around the Yaquina Bay Bridge for hours
Monday night before spotting the body, Coast Guard spokesman Jonathan
Klingenberg told CNN.
The
mother called police around 6:30 p.m. Monday "saying she threw her child
over the side," Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda said.
Officers
detained the mother for questioning.
The water
of Yaquina Bay is more than 100 feet below the bridge. Chances of survival from
a fall that high were "minimal," Miranda said.
Even if a
person survived the fall, the police chief said, one could only survive the
frigid water for about 20 minutes.
