Armed soldiers from 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Thursday, stormed the Maiduguri Northeast regional office of Media Trust, publishers of Daily Trust Newspaper.
DailyPost
gathered that two of the paper’s managers were quizzed on a story it published
on alleged mutiny by troops of the division earlier in the week.
The story
which unsettled Army authorities, was widely re-published by other media
houses.
About
eight soldiers led by the newly deployed spokesman of the 7 Division, Colonel
Sani Usman, stormed the office located along Baga Road at about 12 noon
yesterday, requesting for the author of the story.
They
questioned the Regional Operations Manager, Jamilu Aliyu and the outgoing Operational
Manager, Aminu Ado, on the orders of the acting General Officer Commanding
(GOC) of the division, Brigadier General M.Y Ibrahim.
The duo
was however released after interrogation.
Both
Aliyu and Ado said the staff were allegedly threatened and repeatedly cautioned
to stop unnecessary criticism of the military in their reports.
A letter
signed by the division Spokesman, Col. Usman, and dropped at the office, warned
Daily Trust to retract the story, saying “failure to do so would henceforth
attract sanctions.”
“It is also noted that over time your paper
has been unnecessarily critical of the military without cross-checking your
facts with the formation.”
